The terraced vineyard

In Sion, the grapes were already harvested long before the Gauls. However, the origins of the culture of the wine on a large scale are the Romans.

With more than 5,000 ha of vines, Valais represents a third of the Swiss vineyard and is proud of its more than 50 cultivated grape varieties. The 420 ha of Sion vineyard make it the second Valais wine-growing town.

The city of Sion has classified four of its wines as Grands Crus: the Fendant, the Hermitage, the Dôle and the Syrah. Local wines have won numerous distinctions in European competitions.
